THE PURE JOY OF BIOLOGICALS
Published Commentary by Declan Murphy
- The SOURCE - April 2002
The biologicals business is unique, totally different from any other area of the pharmaceutical world. Whereas in
the pharmaceutical business you deal with chemicals, pills and pharmacies, in the biologicals world you deal with
people who suffer life-threatening diseases, people in pain, and their potential access to life-transforming proteins.
In the biologicals business we are challenged to deal with, face and experience directly the reality of people
with physically broken lives, potentially damaged psyches, and people looking to us with hope for help. This is
both our great privilege and our enormous responsibility. We can play a role in repairing their lives.
I was privileged to be the Executive Director of the World Federation of Hemophilia. I was honored to be allowed
by many of the patients to enter and share in their lives of silent pain. And people with hemophilia are always
in pain, bodies and limbs twisted over the years because of the constant pain. Modern coagulation factors have
transformed their quality of life.
We think of burn and shock victims who so desperately need oxygen in a moment of need to circulate the blood
through their veins; those patients with immune systems compromised in a multiplicity of ways whose defenses are
bolstered by a variety of immunoglobulins; those who suffer the gradual degeneration of their lungs and gasp for
air who now have access to support. And so on. The development of modern biological products has inspired so many
people to hope for a more normal lifestyle.

a more normal lifestyle.
To be successful in the biologicals world, though, we must allow ourselves to be vulnerable, feel and empathize
with people in their pain, care for them, even shed a tear, and, at times, feel utterly incapable of remedying
their pain.
In this arena we cannot be observers or just stand by and watch. To be successful we must become involved, feel
their hurt, listen to their lives, journey with them as far as they will allow us go, share in their successes,
and give them our best all the time. It is a journey of commitment, love and caring, and great respect for the people
we are serving. It is the pure joy of the biologicals business.
We may be executives, or in sales and marketing, or, perhaps, research or manufacturing. That is a label, never
our essence. Our essence is that we are people. And the essential goal of our journey in time is to learn to become
whole and to help others become whole too. To quote the poet John Donne: "No man is an island". We may be competitors
in business, but, as Stephen Covey writes: "Think Win-Win means wanting other people to win as well as yourself".
In business we all must be conscious of the bottom line. Otherwise there will be no business. Nevertheless, our first
and principal responsibility and what must guide every decision in our professional lives are the people who ultimately
will benefit from our dedication, and they are the patients whose lives can be transformed by the products that we
are privileged to bring to them.
We all can make a difference. In the humdrum, boredom and routine of our every day lives, whether in our offices or
traveling, we must keep in mind what the German philosopher Nietzsche once wrote: "Do not expel from your spirit the
hero you carry within". And each one of us is called, in our own time and position, to be a hero. We do that by giving
of ourselves freely and unconditionally to those whom we serve.
